Why haven't I heard about it before?
Hypochlorous Acid in it's synthesised form is a relatively unstable solution, which means that once produced it doesn't stay in it's end form for long. The solution breaks down back in to plain salt water very quickly, making it difficult to bottle and store. This Bio-Degradable feature however, is what gives Electrolysed Water it's Eco-Friendly credentials. With the Toucan system, you can produce HOCl on demand, meaning you never need to worry about the effectiveness of the solution.
Traditional machinery required for the mass production of HOCl is costly, making it largely prohibitive for smaller businesses and domestic use. Advances in technology now mean HOCl is available for everyone.
Electrolysed Water doesn't look or smell much different from normal water causing many people to doubt the effectiveness of the product. In fact, HOCl is 80 - 120 times more effective than traditional bleach solutions but doesn't require bubbles or strong odour in order to be such a powerful cleaner and disinfectant.
In it's natural form, Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) is found in the white blood cells of mammals, including humans. HOCl is used by the body to help neutralise infections as part of the immune-response.
The first known discovery of HOCl was made by Antoine Jerome Balard in 1834. It was first used as oxidising and bleaching agent as early as 1841 and was used for wound care in the First World War.
A common method of synthesising Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is by passing an electric current through a mixture of water and salt (electrolysis). The result of electrolysis are two different compounds, namely Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) and Sodium Hypochlorite (NaClO).
Hypochlorous acid (HOCL) is the most effective disinfectant in the chlorine family available in a dilute solution. It is suggested that HOCL is 80 to 120 times more efficacious than sodium hypochlorite (commonly known in a dilute solution as bleach), largely because the uncharged HOCl is more effective in penetrating and destroying cell walls. HOCl has a low Ph level (Alkaline).
Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is commonly found in liquid bleach and is used because of its disinfection, cleaning and deodorising characteristics. NaClO has a high Ph level (Very Acidic).
The Toucan Electrolysed Water Generators produce a mixture of HOCl and NaClO around 80/20, giving the resultant solution a Ph between 7.8 - 8.5. As the solution is only very slightly Alkaline (Ph neutral = 7) it will not bleach surfaces or materials and is safe on skin.
